I viewed laptops with the same suspicion as PDA’s at first - but have since come full circle. My first laptop - a Dell 1150 Inspirion - is far from perfect though. This particular model overheats badly, making necessary the permanent fixture of an ‘akasa’ base with two addittional cooling fans.
This makes the machine rather heavy, and less truly portable. My tip: don’t buy a cheapo laptop that’s designed to look good for a few months - it will cost you more. I think my next laptop will probably be a Toshiba or Sony.
Laptops of today are truly Desktop replacements. My next desktop will certainly be a laptop! Of course the problem of times past was that, in general, laptop parts were twice the price and lesser capacity than those of desktops. While this situation has changed substantially ( presumably as a result of greater market penetration ) It still pays to go for the highest spec at the time of purchase.
My older Dells - the CDi comes to mind - feel more like those ‘rugged’ machines designed for building sites which are specifically designed to survive being rolled over by cars. Such machines cost thousands. These Dell Laptops of the 1990’s feel as though they would survive being thrown off the top of a building.
Who knows, now that Dell have apparently re - discovered quality, I may check them out after all ...
