Somewhere between the suitcase ‘portables’ and the later super - expensive ‘laptops’ fell some crumbs ... known as ‘Personal Organizers’ or ‘Assistants’. They were, in a manner of speaking, the Netbooks of their day: small, simple and relatively low - capacity.

They were also affordable, so even if you were unemployed you could still ensure that you never missed that important meeting, or at least be seen that way in the Coffee Dock! ( sly ‘niche marketing’ going on there? )

These little devices became quite complex for their small size, packing in backlit displays and a host of features ranging from basic accounting to World time. I am not so sure that the enormous power / size leap forward in mainstream computing has happened in the intervening years.

They were basic, but worthy nonetheless.
